Now that I'm in Linux now; I've realized somethings why it's so great!
Here are 10 reasons why I love Linux! Now, this may not be true to you, but it is to me! It's just the facts...
1) Open-Source (Community maintained) software. It's a great Operating System that gets it's updates all in one place. In the update manager. In Windows, you had to update most of your programs manually. In Linux, it is not the case. Because you download all your software from either 3 places. The Add/Remove program, the Synaptic Manager, or compiling from the source (either .DEB or a tar.gz file). Unlike Windows where you can only install a application with one thing, a executable. Depending if that's a MSI, a EXE, or even a script file (found in servers).
2) Compatibility. When I'm in Linux, it gives me the feeling of compatibility. That I know if there's a new driver, it'll install it. Since Linux is extremely internet dependent, my drivers showed up all in one place, the Hardware Drivers program under System. It's a great hardware manager that is way easier to use than Device Manager in Windows.
3) 64-bit compatibility. When I was in Vista with 64-bit, it was just trash! 64-bit with Vista just sucks! It's not any faster in my opinion; mostly for the fact that most software ran in 64 bit is 32 bit, making it the same speed at 32 bit. You cannot find much software that's 64 bit compatible. Including many games. And even sometimes, it locked up on me! Now that I'm in 64-bit Linux, it sure does take advantage of my 64-bit processor! Everything is fine, and it found (most of) the drivers. Except for my Wireless card. I had to manually install that with the MadWIFI package... Mostly for the fact that many people (Atheros) does not give us the source code to their drive. Making Wifi a little of a pain to install if you have a different card...
4) Speed. Linux IS faster than Windows. There is no doubt about it. You cannot argue with me. It takes up WAY less RAM than Windows Vista does, and while it can look 2x as good as Vista with Compiz installed. Although Firefox is still a memory hog in both Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux... :(
4) Open source software. I know this is for the second time. But, Linux is FREE! It will cost OEM manufacturers like Dell, HP, Lenovo, IBM, Compaq, and all the others less money to use!
5) Support. Since this is community maintained software, you basically get the best support out there. The world wide web. Because for most distributions of Linux, there is a forum (a community) to go along with it. This will allow users to post for their questions, and get fairly fast support! It's one of the best types of support out there.
6) Linux is EVERYWHERE. It's on most of the servers in the world, it's on the TV's in your house, maybe your digital watch (high tech), maybe your cell phone, or maybe even your (super) computer now (Linux is often found on many super computers). Although you cannot see it, you are with Linux all the time pretty much! There is something called the Unix Kernel, that basically runs Linux (and somewhat of Mac OS X, it's modified and called Darwin).
7) You can modify EVERY part of Linux. I'm not kidding. You could make Linux look exactly like Windows Vista if you wanted to. Granted it would take a lot of time, but it is possible. The reason why I am using Linux right now is because some software (not going to say what is) messed up my Networking (finding my server + Windows Shares) in Vista. And, I'm glad it did! Because, I would not be using Linux if that happened. Now if Microsoft was smart enough, they would allow a feature to reinstall the Networking part, and make that all defaults now. But no, their not going to do that.
8) Low resource. Since Linux uses barely any RAM, it's a lot faster, and with this you can use that extra memory to do emulation, and just allow you to open up more applications also.
9) Easy to use. It's very well put together, and it's a no brainier in order to find something in the settings. It's organized very well.
10) Manages Dual-Core processors way better than Windows. In Windows, it was basically your second processor is you, "back up", processor. Because I found that my seconds core was not used the much. But in Linux, it basically splits them up half and half. This allows your computer to use less power, makes you system run cooler, and just have a wonderful user experience. Linux is great for quad-core systems too! Because it actually takes advantage of all your cores!
Just some of my ideas upon Linux.
